Our trip to Phu Quoc was unique compared to our other Southeast Asia adventures, as we spent most of our time relaxing at the hotel. However, I still want to share some useful information and recommendations for those considering a visit to this beautiful Vietnamese island.
Arrival at Phu Quoc Airport
Domestic arrivals in Phu Quoc can be a bit chaotic. There are only two carousels for luggage, and the space becomes crowded as entire families gather around the carousel, making it difficult to retrieve bags. We opted for a Grab ride to avoid the aggressive taxi offers outside. Booking inside the airport helped, although finding the driver was tricky due to the lack of a designated Grab pick-up spot. We eventually met our driver after exchanging pictures of nearby flags.
Sunset Town and Our Hotel Experience
We stayed at La Festa Curio Hilton in Sunset Town, which replicates a European feel and offers daily entertainment. From our ocean-view room, we enjoyed:
Awaken Sea Show (5:15 PM)
Symphony of the Sea Show (7:45 PM)
Kiss of the Sea Show (partially visible from our room)
Fireworks at 9:30 PM (every day)
Symphony of the Sea Show, the evening counterpart to the daytime Awaken Sea Show Conclusion of the Kiss of the Sea Show and beginning of the fireworks, viewed from the clock tower
The hotel’s poolside experience was perfect, with comfortable loungers, a cold-infused water station, and a DJ in the late afternoon. We skipped the Kissing Bridge and the world-record-holding cable car due to the heat and our preference for the hotel's amenities.
Historical and Cultural Insights
Phu Quoc’s history is fascinating:
Became Vietnamese in 1600
French colonization in 1862
A prison for war criminals, later expanded by Americans
Prison closed in 1975, now a free museum depicting harsh conditions (not for the faint of heart)
Sunset Town is still under development, with many empty buildings awaiting rental. The area is preparing for the 2027 APEC conference, so the potential is immense.
Dining and Local Cuisine
We indulged in local dishes like lobster and pomelo salad, which we enjoyed twice.
Other specialties include:
Herring fish salad (highly recommended by locals)
Fresh noodle soup (likely contains gluten)
Our romantic dinner at the top of the Clock Tower was unforgettable. With a private chef and server, we had the best view of the shows and fireworks. Perfect for a proposal or special occasion.
Activities and Entertainment
On a cloudy day, I treated myself to a manicure and pedicure. Nearby Sun Bavaria Pub offered live entertainment, including Argentinian tango and drum performances. However, some off-key singing eventually became tiresome.
Tips for Departure
Leaving the hotel two hours in advance was ideal. The 20-30 minute drive to the airport was smooth, with a quick check-in despite the requirement to fill out an online form for Malaysia three days prior. Fortunately, no documentation was requested at the airport.
Final Thoughts
Phu Quoc, especially Sunset Town, is perfect for a relaxing, resort-style vacation. The weather can be hot and humid, so plan your visit outside the rainy season. Whether you seek cultural experiences, unique dining, or simply a tranquil poolside escape, Phu Quoc has something to offer.
Missing this resort feel already, as the serene ambiance and luxurious amenities created an unparalleled experience that is hard to replicate in everyday life.
